The Neighborhood between Neighborhoods
For over a century, Greenwich Village has been known and beloved as the bohemian enclave of New York, acting as the East Coast's hub for the Beat and 1960s counterculture generation. It has also served as the cradle of the modern LGBT movement in America. With its acceptance of nonconformity and reputation for tolerance, the Village quickly attracted artists, writers and creative thinkers that would later be responsible for the influx of avant-garde galleries, performance spaces, stores and restaurants.
